Doors, Locks, and Windows

Keys

A physical key to the front door is located under the back cushion of a chair in the backyard. Enter through the side gate and found the chair along the backside of the house, closest to the back door. It will be in a blue Tupperware container.

Front Door

The front door has a smart door lock (by Level Lock), but also supports standard keys.

The front door also has an Eufy video doorbell, which is connected to the in-house chime in the home. I chose Eufy because it does not stream any content to the cloud. The video doorbell should stay enabled for home monitoring purposes, and upon request I’m happy to delete all footage from the period of your stay. There is an Eufy cam monitoring the driveway as well.

Back Door

The back door by the dining table first requires you to lift up on the handle to engage the bolts, then you can turn the lock. To unlock, turn the lock and just push down on the handle.

Other Doors

The back kids room has a permanent lock installed on the door; do not remove this.

The garage door & the master bedroom closet is intentionally locked. A separate clothes hanger has been provided in the master bedroom for your convenience.

The eastern (driveway) side gate access to the backyard does not have a lock on it; please keep this door closed at night and when not home; you can use the white pull string to open.

The western side gate has a permanent lock; do not use this entrance.

The sliding door locks on the ADU do not work; there is a child pin lock upon the upper edge of the door that should be engaged when not in use. Inside the ADU, there are pieces of wood that will fit in the door slide area that will prevent the doors from being opened. In the 8 years that we have lived in this home, we have never once had a entry or safety issue with the ADU. Never.

Windows

Many windows in the house are operable. You are free to open the windows, we just kindly ask you to ensure all ground floor windows are closed and locked at night time (we often sleep with the master bedroom windows open!). Windows to the backyard can be left open while out of the house, but please ensure all front yard windows are closed and locked while gone.

Kitchen

We love to cook, and invite you to utilize anything you desire in our kitchen.
Feel free to use anything in the pantry, fridge, spice rack, etc. Seriously, don’t be shy.
Only request we have is that if something is fully used up, please leave a note so we can replenish upon return.

Dishwasher

Dishwashing pods are located in the cabinet under the sink.
To start the dishwasher, first press the ◯ button, then the I button. Now you should see the light next to NORMAL be on.
Firmly close the door shut, and the dishwasher should turn on.
Note: The dishwasher is older, so if the NORMAL light does not turn on, repeat the steps while pushing the buttons harder and for longer.

Note: Do not put the following items in the dishwasher:

  1. Cooking knives (black handle ones)
  2. Zeroll Ice Cream Scoop
  3. Nonstick pots or pans

Stove & Ovens

For the stove, please always use the vent hood – this will exhaust outside the home. Use the knob on the right side of the range – you can rotate all the way to the lowest setting. The knob on the left side is used to turn on the range lights.

Note: the stovetop griddle can take ~10min to come to temperature. If using, turn it on while you prep.

The main oven in the cook range can be controlled by a red mode knob, or by using the flip-down LCD display.

The oven in the wall is a Convection Steam oven. While it supports special steam modes, you can use it as a traditional convection oven with no steam as well. In fact, we use this oven more often because it heats up faster than the larger range oven! Just note that this oven does not have a broiler, and will always use convection so for regular Bake mode recipes, adjust temperature down by 25F or keep a close eye for doneness.
If you are curious about the steam oven, the recipe bookshelf has a Wolf guide about it.

Coffee & Tea

Coffee apparatus are found by the kitchen desk. We have a French press, pour over cup, and the OXO drip coffee maker. There is an OXO burr grinder available on the desk, if desired.

To use the OXO drip maker:

  1. Fill the water & coffee grounds (use the #4 paper cone filter)
  2. Press the button.
  3. Rotate knob to select 2-4 cups or 5-9 cups based on quantity of water.
  4. Press again to begin brewing.

To use the OXO burr grinder:

  1. Make sure the cup is pushed all the way into grinder, it’ll softly click.
  2. Rotate dial for amount you’d like to grind. The default settings (middle) works fine for 5-6 cups of water.
  3. Push the center button to start the grinding. Note: the dial won’t move.

For the electric water kettle, you can choose your desired temperature. Press the “Start” button, then select the desired temperature, then press Start again.

Cookware

Pots are located under the wall oven, baking sheets are located in the cupboard under the knife block.
Above the microwave, there is a cast iron skillet, Dutch oven, Instapot, carbon-steel wok, and waffle maker.

Note: only use the cast iron skillet and wok if you are knowledgable about proper cleaning and treating it with a thin oil layer (moisture barrier) after use. These two items can rust if not properly maintained after use.

There is also an air fryer and a stand mixer on the counter.
Lids and glass containers are located in the cupboard to the right of the range oven.
Plastic storage containers are located in the cupboard to the left of the range oven.

Laundry

You can find a variety of cleaning materials, paper towel rolls, toilet paper rolls, etc in the laundry room shelves. Use any and all as needed.

You can also find a vacuum cleaner (Dyson), and broom/dustpan here as well.

Washer & Dryer

Laundry detergent is located on the shelf to the left of the washing machine.
Dispense a small amount of liquid detergent in this tray of the washing machine:

Dryer sheets (if desired) are located on the shelf next to the laundry detergent.

Linen Closet

Extra towels, bedsheets, and blankets can be found in the linen closet in the downstairs hallway, between the bathroom and the rear bedroom.
There is also a queen air mattress here with pump.

Thermostats, Heating, and Cooling

There is a house-wide radiant heating system in the natural stone tiles throughout the house. The preset temperatures have been dialed in for winter-season comfort. This system is slow to react to desired changes, so we recommend not to adjust the temperatures on the thermostats.

Each bedroom has a circulation or tower fan.

A gas fireplace is available in the main living room and is a quick, comforting source of heat. Simply use the wall switch to the right of the fire place to turn on and off. Do not keep the fireplace on at night while asleep, or when not in the house.

Trash Service

Trash is picked up on Friday mornings.

Please place any trash bags in the gray bin or recycling in the blue bin located in the side alley, and wheel them to the front curb on Thursday evening (if applicable to your stay). After trash service completes, please kindly wheel in the bins to the side alley.

It should have plenty of charge, but if you need charge the bike the accessory bike charger can be found near the back door in the black plastic tote box.

Outside Shower

For rinsing off sand from beach excursions, there are two options:

  1. A faucet with spray attachment in the driveway side alley. Useful for quickly rinsing off sand from legs/feet.
  2. An outdoor shower in the west-side alley (warm water available; can take a while for warm water to flow)

Lawn & Garden

Enjoy the Garden

You are welcome to enjoy anything you may find ripe in the garden, although winter there is not much actively growing.

Bounce House

For the kids, we have an inflatable bounce house you can enjoy.
Only set the bounce house up on grass that is dry. Once unfolded, on one side you’ll see a) a long cylindrical yellow chute and b) a small circular opening. Extend the chute A to its full length and tie it securely around the orange blower output. For the smaller opening B, this is an extra vent. Use the attached string to tie it shut to allow bounce house to fully inflate. There is a power outlet on the wall below the back kid’s bedroom.

Please put away the bounce house (following directions in reverse) after use; do not leave it out on the lawn.

ADU & Work Space

The backyard ADU has a full bath, a queen-sized bed, and a computer workstation.
On the computer desk, you will see a USB-C expansion dock. You can plug this dock into your computer’s USB-C port and you will have:

  1. An external monitor
  2. Power
  3. Ethernet connection to the internet
